Episode 8 – Follow the Leader
Plot: As the dead begin to invade, the group and all of Bloomfield are in dire need of a miracle.
Synopsis:
We begin the mid-season finale with a black screen and the quiet groan of infected in the background. But quickly the noise grows loud, and we cut to Madison and June holding a barely conscious Alicia up as they flee from the mob of walking dead that are breaking through the front gate. We'll see them killing a few dead that get too close as they try to find a place to hide. As they're stumbling about and almost fall over a voice is heard over the moaning and Daniel is seen calling them into the main school building. All three move to the doors as the dead advance and a few people with guns start to shoot past their heads. One will kill a corpse that's about to grab Alicia before all of them make it inside. Just as the doors are slammed shut, we play the intro.
After the intro we start with the main doors slamming shut and people block the doors. The whole building starts getting boarded up at all entrances. It’s a full-on siege. Unlike the pantry from season 3, this is a full-on attack that needs to be continually repelled. As June and Madison carry Alicia through the hallway, the teenager starts to slump as fall fully unconscious and June calls for help. Madison, thinking quick, goes to the basement door and wrenches it open. As the two head down, everyone starts to hear moans of the dead outside and the clattering and groaning of wood as the dead begin pile up. Daniel yells at everyone to keep the dead out, using the knife Alicia tossed him last episode to stab an infected that’s pressing its face at boarded window.
We’ll cut back to June and Madison now carrying Alicia’s body downstairs. The few lab workers who have remained begin to freak out and ask them to leave, but Madison will swear that them and haul Alicia onto a clear lab table. June is shocked at all the infected tied up but will quickly get a hold of herself as she starts to look over Alicia’s wound. One of the lab workers will then try to force them out, saying this is a “restricted area”, but Madison, noticing the pistol on Alicia, pulls it out and tells the scientists to either help them or get out. All of the decided to leave. June is slightly irritated that Madison threatened them when she could have used some help, but quickly gets to business, raiding the cabinets for any medical supplies she can use. When Madison asks how she can help, June will tell her that they got to stop the bleeding and raise Alicia’s chopped arm in the air slightly. Immediately Madison lunges for some rags and small, square container and use both to stop/ slow the bleeding and raise the arm a bit.
June comes back with some medical supplies and begins to clean the wound properly, using water and medicine to wash the bloody stump clean. As Madison asks if Alicia will live, June, all flustered and over her head, tells her that she can’t tell, but she’ll do her best to make sure she does. As she clean the wound she’ll ask what the hell is with the infected that are restrained. Madison will tell her that while she doesn’t know what kind of insanity this is, she did see papers about something called “Project Votus” and informs June that Daniel was supposed to be used for it. June stops cleaning to look directly at Madison and ask, “Daniel? Why him?” Madison will shake her head, silent and thinking about it. Suddenly a crash is heard from upstairs and both women jump. Reminded that a battle is happening upstairs, June looks at Madison again and tells her to go, that she has it all here. At first Madison can’t leave her daughter, but the nurse tells her to go, that she has this handled. More importantly, she’s needed there more than with her daughter. Reluctantly, Madison heads upstairs into the chaos, taking a second to look back at her daughter and June before she reaches the door.
Back at ground level, John, Yoana, Strand, Farah, and Daniel are helping everyone to keep the dead outside. We’ll see Strand and Daniel actually working together to keep a set of windows clear of infected, both using melee to knock back to stab the dead. After killing an infected, Daniel will start coughing again while Strand kill another. The former con man will chuckles at Daniel, making a coy remark that he’s not that old to stop now. Daniel will glare at Strand before the boards begin to break and he and Strand get on the defense again. Tobias, though injured, is working with John and Farah in pushing a tipped shelf against a door as others are banging nails against it. As the door is pushed hard, John will ask Tobias what happened to him, to which Tobias wills say that these people weren’t too friendly. John will nod and respond that he can tell from how he was greeted. Yoana will be killing the dead that are piling up near the doors when Madison joins her, using a rifle to kill a few before being given a knife and stabbing an infected in the head.
We’ll have a long sequence of people keeping the doors blocked and killing infected through the slits. Eventually though some people will begin to run out of ammo and John, realizing they’re running out, calls out to everyone to put the guns down, adding that they can’t use up all the ammo now. Yoana will shout out that they need to get out or get rid of these infected because they aren’t going anywhere. John will say that there are way too many of them to kill, better they keep the place locked up and make a plan before they use those guns again. Just as he finishes, an infected will reach through a slit and try to grab for John. He’ll stab it in the head and as he pulls out the knife the blood will fly and smack Madison in the face. As she wipes it off, she remembers something that Nick did long ago: The guts trick.
As it comes back to her mind she tells the others around her about it, but soon afterwards states that it would be impossible to get everyone out with that trick while keeping them together. Farah suggests that they just need one to get out and distract the dead. Strand will hear the conversation and frustratingly appeal to anybody would want to go outside into that hell. Nobody around them says anything, all looking terrified of what’s out there. But then a voice is heard saying they’ll do it. It’s Farah. Everyone seems shocked and at first Madison tries to convince her to not do it, but Farah explains that she can steal a car at lure the horde south. More importantly, if what she’s heard is true, this is only the start of the horde. They’re a on a timetable and if they redirect the horde soon then there will be nothing to stop the numbers coming at them. We’ll get a shot of Madison, Strand, Daniel, Yoana, and others as we cut to black.
When we return, we see Madison and Farah enter the basement. Both see June still trying to keep Alicia alive and when June looks up both women see her face looks grim. Madison will begin to ask, but June will interrupt by saying that it’s difficult, there is just… she’s never had to do this before and it’s taking a lot out of her to keep Alicia alive. Nodding, both Madison and Farah move to the dead that are squirming more than usual at the sounds of their brethren upstairs. They immediately go the nearest one and stab it through the head. Once it's done, they undo the fastenings and drag the now lifeless body upstairs. Soon they have hauled the body near one of the entrances to the roof and Madison pulls out a knife and plunge it into the infected's stomach. She grimaces a little at the smell while Farah tries, and fails, to hold down her dinner. Before Madison reaches into the slimy intestines, she looks up at Farah and once again asks her if she's ready to do this. Farah gains control of herself and tells Madison, in a resolute voice, that she isn't, but to put the guts on her anyways. The oldest surviving Clark begins to do so, making sure her engineer friend is completely covered in infected guts.
Once the process is over, Farah stands up and starts to head up the stairs to the roof. Madison calls out to Farah and after a small pause tells her to take care. The Arabic woman will nod and head up and as she does Madison tells her that no matter what she needs to be quiet. Once gone, Madison rejoins the efforts of the community in keeping the dead out. She’ll first meet Yoana, who has taken a break from killing infected and instead is making sure those who aren’t fighting are not panicking. When Madison asks how it’s going Yoana will tell her that everything seems to be holding up, but that’s hard to tell with how many dead are surrounding the building. Madison goes silent and nods, telling Yoana they got to keep it together.
We'll move to Farah, who has reached the roof and is looking for a way down. Walking slowly in order to blend in, she views the horde of groaning dead and eventually finds a garbage container. She carefully tries to ease her way into it, but unfortunately too many infected have pulled up around it and Farah becomes aware that if she misses her fall that she'll be injured or cry out in pain. Or both. Then it would be the end of her. Over the edge, Farah spots a window not too far from the garbage container. We see her terrified about what she’s about to do, but eventually she sits down on the edge and tries to dangle her feet down below. Cutting to inside, Daniel kills another infected then notices Farah’s legs peaking in through the boarded-up window. Leaning closer, he notices the trash container to his right. Knowing that Farah needs to get down, he tells the others around him to get the dead moving to the other side so she can get down.
Daniel, John, and Madison, along with others from the community, start to bang on the windows to the rooms left of Farah’s location. Soon enough the dead begin to amass more to the sides and Farah, seeing her chance, eases her way onto the trash container below her. She almost falls off as she lands but steadies herself and slides down onto the earth below and into the horde of dead. Slowly she begins to make her way south, deeper into the swarm. We’re going to get right up into the faces of the walking dead, as well as Farah’s face as she navigates through the infected. She’s really trying to keep a cool head as she’s sliding up against the crowds of infected, but like most people you can see she’s incredibly scared. We’ll stay on her for a long while until she passes a house. As she does, she’ll hear some sudden banging and turn to look at it.
Farah stops and watches the house, hearing the cries of help emanating from it. She’ll pause for a long moment before deciding, with a grim face, to go the rescue of these prisoners. As she gets right up to one of the windows, she notices who is inside: A three soldiers, including the one that was harsh to her on her first day at the oil field. They see who she is and continue to beg for help and Farah tries to shush them. Then, using the infected guys on her, she writes on the window “Guts Hide You.” All of them look into the house and Farah, peering through the window, notices a motionless infected lying on the ground. Though they understand what she says, they tell Farah there has to be another way, their faces scared of doing something so… disgusting. Silent, Farah shakes her head and points at her filthy attire. Soon enough, all of them are cutting up and covering themselves in infected guts before signaling Farah that they’re ready. She gives them the shush signal again and the door to the house opens up and all the soldiers shuffle out. They look just as scared as her, but Farah tries to calm them down by whispering that they need to move the horde out of the base. One of the soldiers points south over the mass of walking dead at a small truck that seems less crowded than other places in the base. All four move toward it, Farah leading with slow movements to what could be their salvation.
However, when they’re a few yards away from the truck and Farah starts to smile, the nasty soldier pushes her to the side and makes a beeline for the truck, followed by the other soldiers. Farah, knocked into the dead, grunts but tries to stay quiet as she watches the panicking soldiers try to fumble and turn on the vehicle. Farah, noticing the dead are becoming active and possibly aware of the disguises, hides out of the hubbub and watches as the soldiers try to fight off the dead that are beginning to pile up around the truck. Expectedly, all of soldiers, despite their desperate efforts, are overrun and we watch the dead violently rip them apart and feast on them.
Returning to the school, everyone returned to keeping the dead out once Farah got away. Unfortunately, the growing numbers of infected are starting to put stress on the entrances of the school. The groups of people who were initially on the sidelines and tending to others in distress have begun to join the defense. Madison and John are the main leaders of this defense, keeping people in line while fighting alongside the community. We’ll also see Yoana, Strand, Daniel, and Tobias fighting and fixing as well, all four and the others showing tiredness in the dark of the night. Yoana will rub her eyes as she resecures another door and pants about how she could really use a break. Strand will try to keep her spirits up by saying Farah will get them out of this. When Yoana questions how he knows she will, Strand will say that it’s really all that he’s hoping for right now.
Suddenly a scream is heard, and Tobias, John, and Yoana all run to the source. It’s the gym and a set of doors to the outside have broken completely. The horde starts to make their way inside and all three, plus those in the gym, begin to fight off the dead. It’s a losing battle as we see several members of the community get overrun by the mass of dead. As another member gets pinned down and swarmed, Yoana starts to have a panic attack, remembering returning to the synagogue to see all the dead people, the people she abandoned. We'll see quick flashes of this moment as the stress overwhelms her. She’s snapped by to reality as she hears John crying out for help and breaks out of trance. She lunges and smashes the head of an infected almost on top of him while muttering "Not again… I'm not letting it happen again!" All three and the others, knowing the gym is lost, run back through the doors into the hallway and begin to barricade it off.
Madison will come by and ask what’s up and John will tell her that the building won’t last much longer if Farah doesn’t get the attention off them. Strand will hear this and ask where the captain is, that it’s his town, he fought like hell to defend it, so where is he now? Realizing this, Madison starts to frantically ask about if anybody knows where Peter has gone. Soon enough she’ll find Ian and he’ll tell her that Peter is up in the communications room. Before we cut to black, we’ll see Madison run off to find the captain.
When we return, Madison reaches the communications room to find Captain Peter working on the radio. She’ll slam the door and Peter will jump in surprise as Madison tells him off about leaving everyone to fight, adding that he told her that he did a lot to keep this place safe. Peter will scowl at Madison, saying that Bloomfield isn’t safe anymore, especially since her friends brought all this trouble. Madison will counter that he told Nathaniel Lyons that he had it under control. This will shock Peter, asking Madison how he heard him say that to the Lieutenant Colonel, but halfway through Peter stops, then shakes his head before telling Madison that he had it under control while adding “I’ve been doing so much to keep this place safe. But now it’s lost and we need to salvage what we can.”
Peter, after a long pause, will tell Madison that there is important data that cannot be lost. Without this data there is no Bloomfield, no supplies, nothing. “If this town is to stay functioning, we have to keep this information safe.” Still angry, Madison will ask if he’s referring to his experiments in the basement. Less shock is shown on Peter’s face, but still enough to tell the audience she’s frazzled him. Trying to keep the peace, Peter tells Madison that they just need to get to a helicopter, and they’ll be able to get the CRM for help to clear the place out. Flabbergasted, Madison tries to explain Farah’s plan to lure the dead away, but Peter will say it’s nonsense, that one person isn’t going to save this place now. He’s going to take his men, lock up the basement, and leave to get the CRM’s aid and clear the place to recover the stored data.
At the news, Madison will tense up and tell Peter that her daughter is down there in the basement. She’s fighting for her life and all his people are fighting for their own lives as well. Is he seriously just going to abandon them? Peter’s expression will turn dark and he tells Madison that it’ll be a small price to pay for what he’ll have to offer his higher ups. Knowing Peter cannot be turned away, Madison begins to charge at him and as he sees her move, Peter pulls out a CRM rifle. Before he can point it at her, Madison grabs it as well and both begin to tussle over the weapon. We’ll see them smash each other against the desks and walls and fight hard to get the other to let go. In the end, Madison eventually wraps her left arm around the barrel to full grip it, then claws at Peter’s face. This causes him to finally let go and Madison pulls back with the gun and stands up. Peter stands up at the same time as Madison and is greeted with the gun pointed directly at him.
We get a silent pause as both are panting and bleeding with their brawl. Then Peter speaks:
“Madison… put down the gun.”
“No.”
“Madison Clark… as commanding officer I order you to put down the gu-”
“No…”
Captain Peter closes his eyes and takes a deep breath before looking at Madison again. “You don’t know what you’re doing Madison. You don’t know what kind of trouble you’ll be in if you do this. The Civic Republic is dangerous!”
Madison will scoff at this, saying that is ridiculous, there’s no way that many people can still be alive to form a “republic.” Peter will shake his head and tell her that she’s wrong. He’s seen it. She has seen it with the guns and armor that were shown a few days earlier. Madison will then ask about Tobias, why they had to beat up a teenager and find a bunch of little kids. Peter will then say she hasn’t seen much of what’s out there. There are groups that have lived and thrived, and the CRM want to build out through these groups, to grow and create a new world. But the republic despises loose strings.
Madison will then ask about the infected and why the CRM want them. Peter has no clue though, saying they never told him anything on that.
“So you just threw away innocent lives-“
“People who were not going to make it! The sick, the dying, the useless mouths! I was trying to keep as many people alive as possible! Wouldn’t you do that, give up one person to save all the people you love?”
Here Madison wants to say she would, but she thinks about how she was before. How people looked at her when she thought she did bad things for the greater good. How her son and daughter looked at her with disgust. She snaps back to reality when Peter resumes speaking.
“Madison… help me out. Keep me safe and I’ll do everything I can to keep them from hurting you and your daughter. They’ll find out somehow what happens and when they do, they’re going to go for all of us.”
We get another pause as Madison thinks over his deal. She then looks directly into the captain’s eyes. “I’m not taking any chances.” With a curl of the finger, Madison pulls the trigger and shoots Peter in the head. He falls to the ground, dead as a doornail. Madison looks at her kill then takes a deep breath to calm herself. Suddenly cries come out and Madison runs to return to the fight. The dead have begun to pile up so much that some of the barricades are starting to weaken. The doors at the front are the first to go. As the dead start to pile in, Madison gets downstairs and yells at everyone to head up and defend the stairs. We’ll get shots of everyone running up and other staying by to keep the dead from ascending after them. A feeling of doom is gripping the trapped and cornered survivors.
But here we’ll cut to Farah, who is terrified of what she has just seen and heard. As the dead become more aggravated, Farah (still concealed by her guts) is shaking some. A faint scream from back near the school causes her to look back and realize that time is running out. Pulling herself together, she walks among the dead once more and reaches the vehicle. Seeing one of the ripped open soldiers with a pair of keys on her, she snatches it out of the lifeless hands and inserts it into the ignition. Noticing the gun and grenades on one of the soldiers, she grabs those too and places them on the passenger seat. After a few attempts, in which the dead begin to see past her disguise, she gets the car running and honking. A smile stretches her face, but quickly vanishes as a dead woman tries to chomp down on her. There will be some struggle until Farah manages to stab the infected with a screwdriver. Pulling the motionless body into the Humvee, Farah slams her foot in the gas and rockets out of the surrounding swarm. Holding the horn down, Farah watches as the main body of the horde turns its attention away from the school and towards the vehicle fleeing south.
We will watch Farah guide the horde away from Bloomfield for a while until she drives over the river below. At first with unsteady hands, Farah takes a grenade, pulls the pin, and throw it out the window. The explosion catches a few infected, but more importantly the noise helps attract the dead to her. She’ll repeat the process a couple more times as the mighty army of walking dead follows the noises south. Once on flat grounds and past the oil field, she stabs the horn of the car so the horn won’t stop going then applies new guts to herself from the corpse she dragged with her. When she’s fully slicked up she locks the gas down slightly so the car continues to move at a slow rate. Once finished, Farah jumps out of the vehicle and hides behind an outcrop of rocks to let most the horde pass. From behind the large stones she sees the army of dead heading south, not a care in the world. Even when the car finally stops moving miles away and out of her sight, they keep walking south, merely following the other dead around them.
As the main bulk of the horde outside the base follows Farah, most of the those that are stuck in Bloomfield lose attention. Those inside the school though are still hungering for the flesh of the survivors. The stairs have been lost and now most of the community are held up at the far end of the hallway and the classrooms at that end. Desks have been piled up to slow the dead down and hope is at breaking point. We’ll see all our named characters holding off the dead and it’s going to be intense. But then suddenly John, who steps back for a bit to for a breather, sees the horde outside moving south. He tells everyone about this and Madison, knowing that Farah has succeeded, calls to everyone to stick to melee, that they are almost there! We’ll watch as hours pass by of them all fighting the remaining dead off. Slowly but surely all the dead that have invaded the school will be killed off as the community, in small pushes, kill the infected as they either attack or leave the school to follow the horde south. I’m thinking a longer cut version of the fight at the start of season 6B in the main show when all of Alexandria is killing the dead. We’ll have that and when Madison does an especially gruesome kill we cut to black.
When we return for the last of season 5A, the sun is high in the sky and people are leaving the school. Only a few wandering groups of infected are left of the attack and from where they are, everyone can see the great dust cloud from the south. We see most of the survivors covered in blood and guts, completely tired after their all-night fight. Madison will walk out with the others to see the sun, her bones aching from all the times she swung her hammer. Yoana comes to her side as looks upon the scene and smiles. Noticing out of the corner of her eye, Madison asks what Yoana is smiling about. Turning to face her, Yoana reminds Madison of when she left her synagogue, the Ner Tamid was still shining where it hung. Yoana will then talk about how she almost broke down during the fight, how she saw her failures when she returned to find her “flock” dead and turned. But she didn’t give up because there’s life, and so there is hope. “And now look,” she’ll declare, gesturing at the sun. “The sun has risen. The light is not gone. We can still live on.” The words hit hard and Madison grows a small smile on her face as she looks at the sky. Then, hearing a few dead noticing the group, she turns her attention on them and begins the final clearing of Bloomfield.
Meanwhile, Daniel is sitting on the school floor, his back against a wall. He, more than anyone, is exhausted. Strand will sit next to Daniel, asking him first before plopping himself down beside him. We’ll have some silence out of them before Daniel thanks Strand for saving him. Strand will fake surprise as this displace of gratitude and Daniel will glower at him and tell Strand this doesn’t change how he feels about him. The former conman will chuckle and tell Daniel that he’s probably right, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll have to hate each other, adding:
“We won together in Yuma and we won together here. Really shows we can’t be alone. We got to at least try and make friends.”
At these words, some light tapping of feet come towards the two and Skidmark walks into the building. It immediately jumps into Daniel’s lap and Strand laughs, coughing from his tiredness and lack of breath, indicating the cat as a great example of what he’s just said. Daniel will curse but leaves the cat on his lap and gently begins to pet it. Kwahu and Tobias join the three, the former reluctantly agree with Strand. The small group are then joined by Annie, who hugs Tobias close to her. She’ll ask if he’s alright, to which he replies he’s fine. Then, noticing how close they are, they break away, embarrassed. But after a long pause they look at each other and smile, taking the other’s hand. This’ll get Daniel to smile a bit, something that Strand notices, but stays silent to watch the moment.
We’ll cut back to Madison and Yoana, joined by John as they dispatch more of the remainder of the horde left in Bloomfield. After killing the last one, all three notice a few more walls have fallen down from the horde. Believing it to be a problem for later, Madison and the others head back into the main building. Entering downstairs, Madison sees June looking over an unconscious Alicia. Madison, fear returning to her face, hurries to her daughter’s side and asks June if she’s okay. The nurse looks mentally drained and it takes a long moment for her to tilt her head up towards Madison. After taking a deep breath, she’ll say that Alicia has stabilized. Overwhelmed in joy, Madison crushes the nurse in a hug, then takes Alicia’s hand. We see Alicia breathing, eyes closed, and certainly alive. Regaining her breath, June informs Madison that Alicia will still need care to make sure there is no infection, but right now her daughter is out of immediate danger.
Behind the women, John is smiling as his love, seeing her as beautiful even if she’s cover in blood and with unmatted hair. He’ll then feel a tug on his sleeve and he’ll turn to see Yoana smiling and motion him to step forward. “Go on, do it,” the rabbi mutters to him. John will have a look that says, “Really? Now? But it’s not a good time.” But Yoana pushes him forward and he stumbles a bit. June and Madison notice and turn to face John. At first the former cop stutters, not prepared for this proposal. After some unintelligible words, John pulls himself together and speaks to June:
“June… Ever since we met on that riverside, you’ve been… you’ve always been on my mind. I was alone, then you came and made me feel like I didn’t have to be after what I did before. So when you left and I was once again alone, it felt… wrong. I went to find you because there was so much I never got to say to you, to do with you. I love you, June. I love you more than anything in this world. And I can’t keep going with all that not said and not done.”
John will go to one knee and pull out the ring from Flagstaff.
“Will you marry me, June?”
There will be some silence… and then June and nod and say that yes, she will marry him. John gets to his feet and kisses her, saying he loves her so much. June will do the same and both will kiss for a while. Yoana will be smiling more and Madison can’t help but do the same. Then suddenly there’s a groan and Alicia stirs. Everyone comes over to surround her and Alicia looks at her mom and asks what happened. Madison, teary eyed, will tell Alicia it’s all good, that they’re safe now. Alicia smiles and tries to stand up, but is unsteady on her feet. Madison goes to her and helps her up and everyone heads upstairs.
Here we cut to Farah, who has made it back to edge of Bloomfield. She’s sweating all over, most of the guts have fallen off or lost their smell. The heat and the walk have completely tired her out and, unfortunately, there are a few infected outside the southern gates. They notice her and begin to advance, to which she grabs a rock and knocks one down to the ground. Before she can hit another one though there are yells and the infected turn to face their new attacks. Knowing that gunfire could bring the horde back, John, Yoana, and Strand stick to melee and kill the last of them. Farah is absolutely grateful for the save and her smile is proceeded by falling to her knees. John and Strand help her up and she asks how everyone is doing. Strand will tell Farah that they made it and all of them head back to the school.
When they return, all of survived the assault are gathered in the school cafeteria (originally the army mess hall). Madison, setting Alicia on a seat, stands up and calls for order. She tells them all that Captain Peter is dead and for who is in charge now. At first nobody answers, most of the soldiers have been wiped out by the undead. Then Ian, the soldier that befriended Farah and Daniel, stands to his feet and says he is. Madison will then tell him about the damage done to the base, saying that right now it’s too much to repair. She’ll then ask if there was any plans Peter set in case of an emergency such as this. Ian will think some before exclaiming that there was also a temporary outpost up river that could be retreated to. Madison nods and tells everyone that that’s where they’ll be heading to soon. For now, everyone needs to rest up and to have guards stationed.
As everyone disperses, Madison motions to Ian and they, along with Strand, Farah, Daniel, head to Peter’s office. John and June take Alicia to a place for her to rest while Tobias and his fellow kids properly reunite with their families. Once in Peter’s office, Madison unfurls a map of the land around Bloomfield and looks at everyone around the table. They all look to her as their new leader and she nods, and begins to ask them for thoughts on what needs to be done now. As the discussion begins we get a birds-eye view of the map and all of them talking. As we zoom out to include everyone we cut to black and the end of Fear season 5A.
