Episode 4 – What We Do to Live

Plot: After reuniting with an old ally, the group are dragged into new conflicts.

Synopsis:

We begin this episode with the clatter of feet throughout the house until we pan to see all of our group being tied up by Tobias’s group of kids. Strand is definitely the most irritated by their capture, especially when one of the younger kids gets too close to him and starts to poke him. He gives the kid a dirty look, causing her to cry and run away and a few others to point their weapons at him. Madison will reproach him, but Strand snaps back that being tied up by a bunch of 4th graders isn’t really something to be cheerful about. A few kids will be angry at that comment, but Tobias will stop that before turning to Strand to warning him that he’s lucky they didn’t shoot him and his group on site. Strand begins to say, “Oh please, you probably don’t even have any bullets,” but Madison interrupts him and turns to Tobias. She explains their situation, their days on the road with little supplies and protection. Another kid, a Native American boy around Tobias’s age, suggests that they kill them anyways, they already have enough mouths to feed. Tobias shakes his head, then turns to talk to others in his group. With a chance to talk, John Dorie asks where Madison knows this kid from and she tells them about her job as a guidance counselor and that he was a student at the school she worked at, as well as the person who basically warned her about the infected. “He was ready for the end. Maybe he could help us.” Strand snorts at this and harshly jokes about being saved by a bunch of kids.

Before Madison can reply, Tobias returns and tells a few of his people to untie Madison, adding that he wants to speak with her. Alone. With the kids aiming their weapons at the others, a few other children pick Madison up and undo her restraints. Tobias leads her to the kitchen and as they walk out of the room we cut to the intro sequence.

When we return we see Tobias and Madison sitting down at the kitchen table opposite from each other. Both of them are a little nervous around each other. Both are different age groups, their last meeting was a little awkward, and this sudden meetup was very unexpected for both of them. Tobias will start first, asking Madison what happened since they last met. Madison will tell him that they were able to escape Los Angeles, traveled down to Mexicali, then have some trouble with a large group there and in Arizona. Keep it simple and without too much detail. Tobias will then say, “And… Mr. Manawa and Nick…?” Madison will shake her head and Tobias will say he’s sorry for her loss.

Wanting to break away from that topic, Madison asks about what happened after the school. Tobias will tell her that he got in touch with his uncle and aunt soon after being dropped off at his house and soon all of them were on the road east, away from the city. But it didn’t take long for them to realize how dangerous the world was becoming because soon after they got out of the city and rested, they were almost set upon by a herd. They eventually met up with a smaller group and traveled some. At once point they met up with a larger group and soon moved into an arena near the outskirts of Shiprock. That was just over 8 months ago.

But just over a month ago a mysterious group comes by and tells them to pack up and come with them. At first everyone just ignored these newcomers, but very quickly everyone realized that these people were no joke. They had a ton of weapons on them. Not just rifles and shotguns, but large machine guns and even mortars. The adults of Tobias’s group tried to fight off the newcomers, but there were too many with too many weapons to deal with. When they tried to run away almost all the adults were caught and those that managed to escape deserted the kids. Since then they’ve been on their own, scavenging other places while keeping an eye out for these new people. When Madison asks about this new group, Tobias tells them that they’re military, but like no military out there. “It was as if they were ready for this new world.”

We have some silence as Madison digests these words. After some thinking she asks the teen if he knows what happened to the others, to which he replies that he doesn’t know, but when they last saw their home it was completely abandoned so they must have been taken somewhere. Thinking it’s best to explain herself more Madison says they were heading to Shiprock for supplies because they’re heading north. At least out of the heat and desolation of the south. She’ll try to promise Tobias that if they have any encounters with this new group that they won’t say a word about him or the kids. This doesn’t get the response that she was hoping for from him though as he instead looks at her intently and tells her a story about how he and his relatives were almost taken in by a small group before that group tried to kill them and take their stuff. “I’ve seen what a promise can get you, Mrs. Clark…” This story makes Madison think over her potential ally more. She wants to make a deal with Tobias. Because yeah he’s a kid, but he’s also got a lot more people than him and she thinks he could be more useful to her as an ally. After some silence between them she tells him that they can both go to Shiprock together. Adding that both their groups are low on supplies and they could work together, Madison tries to put on a strong presence to convince Tobias to agree.

We’ll have a shot of both of them looking at each other from across the table before cutting away to the others. Still tied up, they all just look at the kids around them. Some are on guard, bored out of their minds, while others (mostly younger) are goofing off a little. Everyone except Strand seem to be curious about these kids and soon Alicia breaks the silence by asking one of them, a blonde girl a little younger than Alicia, about the cat that is still snuggling with Daniel. She replies that they named the cat Skidmark because they found it in a car crash on the side of the road with, who they think is, its owner. They had turned from the crash and the cat just kept following them after it got out so they kept it. The Native American boy will tell the girl, who we learn is named Annie, to be quiet, but she’ll snap back at him, Kwahu (Eagle for the Hopi Native American tribe), that it was just a harmless question. Kwahu though isn’t satisfied and sees them as hostiles.

Before the conversation can get violent though Madison and Tobias return, with the latter telling everyone that they’ll be going back east for supplies and these people are coming with them. Kwahu will not be happy about this and stomps up to Tobias, but Tobias whispers in his ear that they need help, and these people could be of use (something along those lines that’s less generic because I feel I’ve used that line too much). There will be some complaints from the some of the younger kids, whining that they’re tired, they want sleep, and a few other protests. Our main group feels the same way, but they don’t show it as much. With so many voices raised, Tobias speaks over everyone and quiets the room, saying that they can rest right now and in the morning they go. He’ll then tell some different kids to take up watch.

As everyone goes about their business June asks if they can at least let them have a place to sleep. Tobias half-relents, giving the group the other couch cushions to lay their heads on, as well as a few soft things. Madison tries to convince Tobias to let them out of their restraints, but at first Tobias is reluctant due to Strand’s less than friendly demeanor. After around 30 seconds of trying to change his mind though Tobias allows most of the others to be let loose, including Alicia, Farah, and Daniel. John, June, Yoana, and Strand are kept tied up. As some of the older kids (let’s say around ages 12 and up) take care of younger kids, Madison relays everything discussed with Tobias to the others. Alicia will groan and comment on how these big groups seem to keep popping up. Strand however adds that they’re just kids, maybe they’re exaggerating this new group. June adds a rather odd opinion, saying these kids are… they’re kids. They should be with them since they have nobody to look after them. John also agrees with this, but says that he can tell some of them are tough to be able to live like this. Yoana nods with John and June’s statements, though says that while she wants to agree with them she sees the kids dangerous. Daniel joins the conversation then, weakly telling them that some of these kids, especially ones like that Kwahu, could easily kill them right now and murmurs, “These kids have done things no kid should do.” We’ll have some banter between everyone now and until Madison ends it by stating the facts: “Look… We are low on food, water, and ammo. We cannot go back and we don’t know what’s around us. We need a place to go, something to keep us going because I’m going to lay down and die. In the morning, we’re going east and we’re going with a bunch of kids, then that’s that.”

Madison’s declaration ends the conversation. We see some of the group begin to huddle down for the night while others are just walking about the living room. A few of the kids that are guarding them keep their eyes on them and people like Madison, Farah, June, and John try to smile at them. A few smile back, but both parties view the others as strangers. Eventually we go to Alicia as she looks out the window. What she’s looking for even she doesn’t know, but we, the audience, can see that she’s anxious for what’s to come tomorrow. Madison walks up behind her a short while later to see how she’s doing and Alicia confesses that this development is so odd to her and that she feels that this isn’t a moment of happiness, but the beginning of a disaster. “Just when we think things are going our way, something comes and sweeps that out under our feet.” Madison hugs her daughter then and tells her that she will protect her and the others, whatever the cost. We’ll hold on a shot of both of them hugging then cut to black.

Upon returning it is now morning and we see all our main group still asleep. But the rays of sunlight coming in through the windows starts to wake them up, starting with Alicia and Strand. The pitter-patter of feet starts to grow as the kids from Tobias’s group begin to awaken as well. A few of the group like Daniel, Strand, and Yoana will complain about back aches from sleeping on weak cushions (and Daniel still being sick). Soon the whole house is bustling, and the kids are preparing to leave the farm. Our group also getting ready as well, checking their clothes ad rations, as well as the packs on their backs. During this scuffle the ring that John Dorie collected at the mall falls out of his pocket and he leans this as he puts his hands in them. We see him panicking for a small bit before finding the ring in the carpet. It’s a little hard on him with tied hands, but he eventually puts it back in his pocket. Yoana and Alicia will notice this but will not ask questions (just yet).

Soon everyone is outside, the fog from last night all cleared up and the sun shining down without a cloud to stop it. Yoana will murmur how it’s going to be burn her soon, with how often she hid in her synagogue. Some of the kids are inspecting the weapons they took off the group and we see one twirling John’s revolvers. He’ll panic at this, saying those are not toys, to which the kids will smirk and keep fiddling with them. Tobias will come in then and lightly reprimand the boy, saying that a gun is a gun and not to treat them like nothing. Grumbling, the kid will put down the pistols, but then give John a rude gesture (something other than the middle finger like maybe pulling his eyelid down) before walking off. With him now in reach, Madison will ask if he could let the others out of their bonds, but Tobias refuses.

By mid-morning everyone is outside and ready to go. Tobias walks to the barn and everyone follows behind. When the doors are opened we see a few vehicles inside it: Two trucks and a small car. June comments that it would be enough for everyone, to which Annie tells her that they can use the truck on the farm. Strand will ask if that one even has gas, to which Tobias tells them to go find out. A few of the kids, including Kwahu, will take Strand to the truck, with John following behind. Tobias then splits the others of Madison’s group up so they’re all separated. Farah and Alicia will go into the car, Yoana and June in a Humvee, and Madison and Daniel with Tobias in the other truck. Madison becomes nervous and tries to barter with Tobias, but Tobias is firm with his decision. Having to bide her time, Madison goes with the plan, but not before assuring the others in a small huddle to remain calm and not do anything. Yet.

We’ll cut to Strand and John walking to the truck and them looking over the vehicle as best as they can with tied hands. As they’re examining the vehicle Strand will vent his frustrations to his companion, about the heat and lack of anything about them. John will acknowledge this while Strand continues, saying Madison leaving Yuma was the wrong move and that they’ll be in trouble if they follow a bunch of kids. Once again John acknowledges Strand, but says that there wasn’t much of a plan before, so best thing to do now is to just go along. Agitated that he’s not getting through to him, Strand angrily whispers to John, “Look, I know you and your sweetheart are all happy now that you’re together, but it’s not going to work out for you or the rest of us right now. We’re all not going to make it if we are don’t make the right call. And maybe the right call is- “Here!” he’s interrupted by Kwahu, telling them to get a move on as he points his bow and arrow at them. Strand tries to calm things down by saying that they just have to get the vehicle running to see if it works. Opening the door, Strand will pull down shade/ mirror and catch the key that falls out, remarking how it’s the easiest hiding spot. Upon turning the key, the truck gutters at first, but after a few turns it roars to life. Kwahu takes over for Strand in the driver seat while Strand and John are put in the back, with the other kids watching over them.

Back at the barn everyone hears the truck turn on and everyone gets into their vehicles. Tobias and Madison are in the front seats of their car, with Tobias driving. Soon he leads the small caravan and we get a glimpse of everyone in their places: Strand and John unhappy in the back of their truck, Yoana and June in the back seats of their truck, Alicia and Farah in the back seats of their car, and Madison and Tobias in the front while Daniel is in the back. Skidmark sits on his lap as the older man tries to keep himself together. We’ll watch them all leave the farm and drive down along the road some. We’ll then switch to Madison and Tobias in the front car. It’s silent at first until Madison asks how the kids all know how to drive. Tobias answers that a lot of the teens were taught how to drive when they were all one group in case something bad happened. Madison thinks it over, wondering out loud that she should have taught Alicia more about driving before the end of the world. Tobias will almost smile and say that he wishes that too.

We’ll cut away to June and Yoana, both of them contemplating the barren land outside the car windows. To break the silence Yoana asks June about her opinion last night, about how she felt they should stay. June will talk about how when she was a nurse she and how her daughter was somebody who helped younger kids. Kind of an honor role student and who did stuff like community service and daycare. It made June so proud of her and it helped inspire her to be better for both her daughter and herself. “She wasn’t supposed to be born, but what she made of her life showed me that we don’t have to be controlled by our pasts and what we started as. I forgot that for a long while after she disappeared. But John helped me realize it again.”

Yoana will smile and talk about how it was kind of the same for her, being a rabbi with a responsibility to the youth. Even when the end came she helped out the kids that were at the synagogue to be better people. But those and these kids will never have lives like before. June will put an arm on Yoana’s shoulder as the rabbi begins to feel morose and tells her that they aren’t alone. They have parents somewhere. Hopefully not dead. This’ll get Yoana to smile and then she’ll ask June if she ever thought of her and John having children. June will blush some and try to deflect the question to something else, which’ll get Yoana to chuckle and the other kids in the Humvee to make embarrassing noises like, “Oooooooooooo!~” June will playfully snap back to stop their teasing, to which makes everyone smile.

After that we’ll be with Farah and Alicia in the small car. Both of them will be staring out the window, but Alicia will be more on watch for danger. Annie, who is at the driver’s seat, asks them some questions to pass the time like how they’ve survived. Both will tell a bit of their time in Yuma (and a bit before for Alicia) and Alicia will ask the same of Annie. Almost her foot pressure on the throttle, Annie gets control of the vehicle and tells about her dad and how he and her used to live in Denver. He was a radio host and he was one of the first people in their neighborhood to learn of the virus. As soon as the infections began they had packed up and were leaving to go into the mountains and away from people. Both learned to hunt through trial and error with partial success, but soon enough they met others like Tobias and they grouped up and became better at living. She’ll then complain that instead of learning math they should have taught her how to cook or how to boil bad water away. Some of the kids in the car will agree and this’ll get Alicia to chuckle a bit, but Farah will interject about how math can be good, like how you can use it to help build stuff. Annie will say that’s more science than math and Farah will try to dispute it until Alicia starts to laugh. When another kid asks why she’s laughing she’ll say that they’re arguing about math. Of all the things they could be talking about, it’s math… Math! Soon everyone is smiling until one of the kids slowly stops laughing and says they’d rather be at school than live like this. Another kid will hug that one and the laughter from before will disappear as reality sets back in on them.

Not long after that there is a call from one of the vehicles up front, exclaiming they’re almost there. We As Alicia looks out the window we see the town of Shiprock. Crossing the San Juan River, the vehicles begin to park outside a small group of houses with a large wall that’s been upgraded some a small stone wall. Once everyone is inside and the broken gates are blocked by one of the vehicles everyone gets out to look about. It seems the place was definitely hit by a battle, but Strand notices something is off: There’s only a few dead bodies, way less than there should be. And the level of destruction seems way less than there should be as well.

“You said you were attacked,” Strand will say to Tobias. “If that’s true, then where is everybody?” Tobias himself seems uneasy as well at this discovery and we’ll linger on him and some of the others as we cut to black.

When we return everyone seems apprehensive over this news and some of the kids begin to panic. Tobias, Annie, and June all try to calm things down while the others who can fight are on their guard. Madison steps up and says that whatever the case, right now they have to remain calm and make the place secure. Tobias comes in then and starts putting some of the kids on guard at the walls, but then looks at Madison with a glance that says, “Those are my people, not yours.” To iterate this, he then has Madison’s group put into a house. All except for Madison and Alicia, who he takes to a corner of the wall and tells them that he needs help in getting some supplies that are stashed. Alicia will try to coerce him to give the group a little more freedom, but Tobias is adamant. However, he does say that once they have these supplies and things calm down a bit then maybe the others can be let go.

Madison agrees, hoping that this last task will allow her group to at least relax around these armed children. She and Alicia will follow Tobias, who gives Kwahu command while he’s out. Kwahu agrees, very serious in his role and watch. Before they leave Annie tosses Tobias a key and he thanks her. He also hands both women a knife each. As the three survivors walk across the street to the storage units, Alicia ask Tobias if this is really the smart move, to leave the safe place they just found for more supplies at this time. Tobias, unhappily, says it is. “We’re just kids… most of them want their parents back and do anything without them around. I got to keep their hopes up somehow.” This comment gets Alicia to look at her mom, thinking of how much her mom has changed since the dam. She’ll resume looking forward as they quickly get across the street.

As the enter the storage lot, silence permeates the whole place. No infected, no people, not even the sound of animals. It’s disturbing. Meanwhile Tobias is looking over all the storage units to find the right one for the key he has. Meanwhile Alicia and Madison, both without real weapons, mutter about this lack of defense on them. We’ll have a minute or two of the search until Tobias finds the right door and opens it. But just as it open an infected falls right on top of Tobias and he has to struggle as another walking dead starts to join its companion. Alicia and Madison are able to kill both of them and all three look at the locked up stash. However Tobias starts to fume with frustration as the dead they just killed were a few of the deserters that were supposed to look after the kids. It seems that before they were bitten or killed they hid in the locker and ate some of the food.

Before this can be fully digested though Tobias gets a call on his walkie talker (which looks more battered than the ones Madison uses). It’s Kwahu and he tells Tobias that infected are coming up on the houses. A lot of them. A look of real panic comes across Tobias’s face. Madison tries to reassure them that they have guns, it won’t be that hard. However, Tobias’s look doesn’t change and Madison and Alicia both realize something: The kids don’t have much ammo on them. Alicia asks Tobias this and he nods, saying that they couldn’t grab too much before they had to disappear. Cursing, Madison starts to make a beeline back to the houses with Alicia and Tobias chasing after her. As soon as they get out of the storage units they notice a large crowd of infected, at least 80, piling up around the vehicles blocking the entrance with more joining them from the road leading from the bridge. However, some of them are climbing over the vehicle and through the gaps between the truck and the wall.

Meanwhile on the inside, most of the kids have knifes and spears to defend themselves while those with guns only hold them at the ready, too worried whether or not to use up their ammo. Strand, spying from the window, sees this happening and starts fervently to undo his bonds. While the others are panicked though, they openly voice that they’re prisoners and if they try to escape things might not go well. Strand is oblivious to this, saying that right now they’re without weapons and they got to get out or fight, not sit about and do nothing. Just as that’s sad John’s walkie picks up Madison and Farah answers. She’ll tell them all that they got to get out, the kids have barely any bullets on them. Strand will smile at this and that he told them so before getting his hands free. Then he begins to help out the others.

Cutting back to our other three, Madison asks Tobias if there is another way inside the cul-de-sac. He will affirm that there is, but they wouldn’t be able to get past the dead to get there. With no plan in mind, all three begin to try and think up a new plan as the dead keep piling on. We’ll then return to the kids near the gates, especially Annie and Kwahu as the dead begin to break through. Kwahu tries to tell the other kids to get one of the trucks to block the entrance, but it’s too late as the dead begin to break through, staring with small groups. Most of the kids have to reach to get at the skulls of the dead, so the older ones step up and start to take care of them. At first things seem to be in favor of the living, but as the gate starts to break down more the dead come in greater numbers and soon a few of the older kids get overwhelmed, screaming as they get bitten and mauled by the dead. Soon the infected are grouped inside the cul-de-sac and the kids begin to run away screaming.

Annie and Kwahu are two of the few that stand their ground and keep fighting off the dead. But luck isn’t on their side as the broken gate finally breaks down. But just then we hear a gunshot and Strand is using a rifle to kill some of the walkers. John Dorie is just behind, expertly using his revolvers to mow down the undead. Once they take their shots Farah, June, Yoana, and even Daniel move up with their weapons, fighting of the dead with the experienced skills. As Daniel murders another infect, he shouts at the kids to get up and fight too. This gets Annie, Kwahu, and a few of the others rejuvenated with morale again and they resume their attack on the dead. We’ll hear gunshots from outside and then see Madison (with her shotgun), Alicia with her butterfly knife and pistol, and Tobias with a hatchet, fighting the dead on the other side. We’ll keep the fight going for a little longer until all the infected are taken down. Once they’re all done everyone calms down and Madison asks Strand if he’s alright. He’s smirk and reply that he’s never been better, finally able to move his hands. Kwahu looks like he wants to shoot Strand, but Tobias stops him, saying that now… now’s not the time to fight. They got some food to get over. The smaller kids begin to cheer and even the others have really smiles on their faces as Tobias recruits some of his group to help him out. Then he looks as the others of Madison’s group and picks a few of them to assist him. Madison smiles, knowing that they gotten themselves a new ally and possibly a new way to live. We’ll focus on Madison’s face for a bit before cutting to black.

When we get back it’s around mid-day and the last of the supplies in the storage units have been brought to the cul-de-sac. People are smiling, especially Strand, who remarks how it’ll be good to finally have something proper to eat soon. Kwahu gives him a dirty look, but Strand tells him to cheer up. Maybe they’ll get along better with some food in their stomachs. This doesn’t change Kwahu’s expression though and he continues to glare as he walks away. Tobias will walk up to Strand then and tell him that Kwahu… he can be hard at first, but he’s a good person. Just slow to warm up to people. Yoana will remark that even the coldest souls can be warmed through enough care. Strand will tell her not to push it though, but this won’t dissuade Yoana.

As Farah is checking over the door to see if it can be repaired Alicia walks up to her and asks about the gate. Farah explains they’ll need plenty of materials to fix it up (as well as another door panel), but it can be done. She also adds that she finds it odd that the way it was broken down tells her that whoever did it needed a big vehicle to break it down. Alicia will ask Farah if this is something to worry about, but before our engineer can say anything Madison and Tobias join them, the former saying that they still got plenty of daylight to search for anything else. She’ll add that there will probably be less infected about since they wiped out a small herd, so it’ll be safe to explore. Farah points out the condition of the door, but Tobias says there’s another place where some tools where stashed not too far from the cul-de-sac, so close they can walk to it. This does convince Alicia and Farah, but Alicia will add that after it’s done they’ll need a proper door to the place.

Before they leave with weapons Daniel walks up to them and says he wants to join too. Madison immediately tries to tell him no, but June tells her that it could be a good idea to get him walking. He’s recovering more and more each day and Daniel will confirm this (or try to). Since the run won’t be long she relents and all five walk out the gates, unknowingly letting Skidmark follow them. We’ll see them walking down the road east, trying to stay in the shade as the sun shines down upon them. Farah will ask Tobias what tools are at this stash and he’ll explain it’s not just tools actually, but also some metal they get out of cars to weld the doors back together. One of the adults was a welder, used to make choppers/ motorcycles before it all happened and the helped create the gate and walls. Soon all of them reach the warehouse with no infected at all. As Tobias unlocks the door Madison puts Daniel on guard duty outside while the rest go inside. When they enter, they find a whole workshop of stolen tools and metal. Farah is instantly excited, say she always wanted to get into welding, and starts to inspect everything. The other three go about and look at what is for anything useful.

Outside Daniel is on watch with a rifle and notices Skidmark following them on the road, he cracks a smile as the cat gets closer until Skidmark looks straight ahead down the road and bolts away. This perplexes and puts Daniel on his guard. Then faintly in the distant, but growing louder and closer, he hears the sound of engines. Getting up on a car to get a good look he spies five Humvees driving down the road west to Shiprock. All black with three circles interlocked with each other. As fast as he can, Daniel runs inside and tells the others as the sound of engines becomes audio to the others. Tobias’s face pales at the mention of the white circles. “Those are the people… those are the people that came after us.”

Before anymore can be said though they hear all the vehicles stop just on the road outside the warehouse. Indistinguishable voices are heard as people begin to get closer. All five of the group are dead silent, hiding as much as possible. We get closeups of everyone as the tension keeps rising. But the dust of the warehouse begins to move about then Daniel, as much as he tries to stop it, begins to cough. As soon as it begins, an uproar is heard outside.

“WHOEVER YOU ARE, COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP AND WEAPONS DOWN!”

None of the people inside move, other than Farah trying to stop Daniel from coughing. A car starts back to life and all of them hear it move closer to the door of the warehouse. Then a winding noise starts, slow at first, then growing louder until it roars like a chainsaw.

“THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING! COME OUT NOW!”

Still, everyone remains silent and refuse to leave. We hold on Alicia, trying to figure out a way out of this, until Madison, much to the shock of everyone, puts her shotgun away, raises her hands in the air, and proclaims her surrender. Alicia starts to say something when Madison looks at her and tells her to do it. All of them follow, Tobias more reluctant than the others. As fast as she can Madison exclaims that this is the only way out with them staying alive. And just before she finishes the door is kicked in and soldiers, all armored, come rushing in and mob the five. In seconds all of them are handcuffed and disarmed of the guns and knives. As the group are dragged out a woman in the same armor, but without the helmet, comments on the soldier’s quick capture and to put them all in the trucks. Tobias tries to break free, but is unable to escape his soldier’s grip and another one hits him in the face with their rifle butt. Daniel tries to stop them, but another soldier hits him as well. Madison, Alicia, and Farah are all in shock as they’re throw into the vehicles, along with some supplies a few other soldiers grab from the workshop.

As the doors close and the Humvees head back east, we get a shot of Daniel looking out the back window of the vehicle. Still dazed, he notices a figure chasing after him. It’s Skidmark. Thoughtlessly, he calls out to the cat as it gets farther and farther away. The last shot of the episode is a low shot from the ground of the vehicles leaving in the distance and Skidmark stopping his chase to meow at the long away vehicles. As we cut to black we hear one of his meows linger on as a sign of despair for his new, and now taken, friend, Daniel…
