Episode 14 – Protect

Plot: With Bloomfield suffering from the weather, a scavenging mission is enacted to obtain needed materials to keep the community running. But there is another group that wants those supplies as well.

Synopsis:

Our episode begins with a black screen and the sounds of something slamming against the ground in long intervals. After a couple of these, we’ll see a hoe hitting the ground and moving the dirt of a small garden. A few people, including Alicia, are checking on the crops of their small farm. We’ll see that the conditions of Bloomfield’s soil have made it difficult to grow crops. They’re on the edge of the desert and only have a small river for water, so conditions have never been best for growing crops. Alicia, looking over what’s gathered, has a worried look on her face as she asks a few of the people how the farming, who reply that they need better soil and more seeds. The supplies that military were holding onto and were getting from the CRM are running out and without any more supply drops… they’re in trouble. Alicia nods and takes the wheelbarrow of crops with her to storage.

When she reaches there, she meets with Strand who asks how the situation is. Alicia admits it’s not good and explains what she’s learned. Strand is irritated, but openly admits that he knows that this town wasn’t made to be for farming. They’re in a desert, the reason this place was still around was because of the oil and fuel, not because of the land. Nodding, Alicia cannot deny that fuel is becoming incredibly important now, especially if hordes like what attacked them are attacking others. There will be a bit of silence before Strand asks Alicia, “If the horde hadn’t come, would we have been able to live together with those people? The soldiers and Captain Peter?...” Thinking on this, Alicia responds that she doesn’t know and that her mother hasn’t told her what happened with her and Captain Peter. Or nothing else other than she killed him. But Alicia asks out loud if Madison had to do it, did she have to kill Peter? Looking a little rattled, Strand will say he doesn’t know, that Madison hasn’t told him either.

We get another pause before Alicia asks Strand if Madison ever told him what happened after the hotel before they met again at El Bazar. Strand will shake his head and Alicia will explain simply that her mom played a lot of people to take over the ranch and she hopes that side of her is gone… But the tone of Alicia’s voice indicates she’s worried it might not be. We’ll linger on both their faces some as Alicia looks worried.

We play the intro here and go to Madison, who is at her desk documenting the supplies they have left. She’s wrapping up on that though and once she’s done, she’ll stand up, set the completed documents in the desk, and leave the office. As she’s walking through the school, she’s pass by the door that leads to the basement and once again she stops by to stare at it. We’ll hear voices from the battle of Bloomfield, including Peter’s pleads before Madison shot him (as well as hearing her words and the shot). Looking away from the door she power-walks out the building and into the sun. She’ll soon spot Strand who is watching Alicia leave and walks up to him, asking for an update on the crops. Strand gives the bad news and Madison, seeing the problem with the soil, pulls out her radio and calls the San Juan River Community.

On the other side, we hear John pick up and answer and Madison explains the situation. She also asks how the river community is doing and John explains they’re doing well. This answers Madison’s idea that Bloomfield being farther from the water (and the dam) they’re unable to grow crops as easily. Both begin to try and come up with ideas on how to fix this and quickly Strand, looking through his notes, comments that there is a depot of gardening supplies that they took from a while ago. There was plenty still left after their raid it that they can still use. The problem is that the town is out of the range of their pit traps, so there might be infected about. With a plan in mind, Madison says she’ll be going out there with some people to get those supplies. We see John nod and he’ll inquire if she’ll need some extra people for the trip and Madison says she’ll stop by the river community to decide on that. Both will say goodbye before ending their talk and Madison will turn off and slip the walkie onto her belt.

Before she goes to gather people, she’ll turn to Strand and asks how their “project” is going.

“Do you think we’ll have enough for our plan?”

Strand will look over the list of supplies and after a pause he’ll answer with: “In some areas we absolutely will. For others… not as likely.”

Nodding, Madison will say to keep at it while she’s away. Strand nods as well, but notes that their plan might not be smart with their current situation. Their people need these supplies now and what they’re doing with them might not be… efficient. Madison will reply that if Bloomfield and the river community are to become new homes for everyone, they have to be ready. The two agree together on this and separate here. If you’re wondering what this plan is, you’ll have to wait for season 6 to find out.

Back to the story though, we cut here to Alicia, who has finished transporting the crops to storage. She’ll wipe her sweaty brow and ruffle her clothing as they slightly stick to her. Paul, walking by, helps her carry the crops into a wheelbarrow and both sigh and Alicia thanks him for the help. As they stand there we’ll have them interact a bit until Alicia will notice Farah walking alone, her eyes on the ground. Seeing Farah looking downtrodden, Alicia follows her as the engineer goes to the southern wall and sits on it, staring south. Paul will follow her, noticing the woman on the wall and looking concerned. Down below Alicia calls up to Farah, who jumps slightly upon hearing the voice, and asks if she can come up. Farah is a little hesitant at first, but decides to let Alicia up. Paul stays on the ground as Alicia climbs up, the remaining Clark child sits next to the Arabic woman and asks what’s up. She’s nervousness and a long pause until Farah answers that she killed a lot of people because of the horde she drove south and explains her latest adventure beyond the walls. Alicia will be stunned by this news, but will put an arm around Farah to comfort her as the engineer starts to become tearful. Our younger woman will think on the times her group have done similar things… The army base in Los Angeles, the boat people, the hotel, El Bazar… they never had the time to fully realize the likes taken from them to save their own. These memories remind Alicia of her mother, back when she was… Alicia grips more Farah more and sighs.

“It’s not your fault that they died… We got to look out for ourselves sometimes. And at times like these we gotta protect ourselves. You didn’t intend for them to die. If you knew you could save them I know you would have done so.”

Farah, though hearing Alicia, still feels responsible for her actions and resumes looking south towards where the cave and hill are. Pondering out loud, Farah will then sniffle and expand upon her words in that that the horde might have attacked other people too. There were so many that she sent South. Alicia feels more now from this revelation what Farah is going for and starts to lose some of her assertive nature as she looks south with Farah. There’s a noise behind them and both turn their heads to see Paul climbing up to join them. Apologizing, he’ll sit next to them and explain he heard them and wanted to give his own advice to Farah. He’ll go a bit into his origin in Georgia, about losing his group, then voice his inner thoughts:

“We can’t save everyone out there… We have to try our best, for those who we lose… we have to live on for them.”

Still, Farah’s spirits remain low and Alicia, deciding that Farah needs some alone time, gets up and climbs down from the wall, calling Paul to follow. But before she does, she says out loud to the engineer that maybe… we just do what we can. As both survivors climb down, we can see Farah turning her dead for a bit to look at Paul as he disappears from view.

We’ll follow Alicia after she lands on the ground as she goes back to work, Paul following behind her. But partway through her walk to the fields she sees her mother pulling Kwahu from watch and the pair, along with a few others, head towards the armory. Alicia joins them and asks her mother what’s happening. Madison will explain they’re going out on a run and they’re going to the river community to grab a few extra people. The group reaches the armory here and the guard opens it up, passing out guns, ammo, and melee weapons out to people. As Paul is offered a rifle, he declines and asks for HIS rifle. The guard is confused and inquires what’s wrong with the rifle he’s holding out to him, to which Paul will answer that he’s better with “his” rifle. Shrugging, the man asks for which rifle is Paul’s and the tall man will point out a worn, wooden 308 Winchester hunting rifle, the same one he used during the fight in Humbug Gulch. The guard hands it to Paul and he looks it over while the others take ammo and melee gear. Alicia will inspect the rifle and notice some odd things about it: First, there is a laser point, one that is used for star gazing, taped to barrel. Second, the butt of the gun is additionally padded because the one underneath the new padding is worn down. And lastly, there is an ammo pouch on the butt end.

As Alicia watches over the group, she’ll turn to her mother and says she wants to come along. Quickly Madison denies her request, but Alicia retorts that with how much Bloomfield needs these gardening supplies, they need help. She did her time with John Dorie and she’s proven herself to be strong still, she wants to come along with them. We’ll keep this argument going for a bit until Madison folds and allows Alicia to tag along. Smiling, the young Clark woman is given a pistol from the armory and she looks at it for a long moment before slipping it into the holster. Paul, who is watching Alicia as she slips in her weapon, also notices her prosthetic. This isn’t the first time he’s seen it, but it still astounds him that somebody so young has been mutilated by the undead. Alicia catches him looking and asks what’s up, to which he’ll respond that he’s sorry for looking at her arm. It just… doesn’t feel fair for that to happen to her. Nodding, Alicia will sigh and say that life is more cruel than ever.

The two will walk together as Alicia asks about Georgia, where he’s from. How bad were the undead. Paul will go into more detail than before as he recounts how he lost his group early on in the apocalypse and he became the last one left after his companion took her life. The state was overrun, as well as all the other states he passed through to get out of the southeast. When he asks about Alicia’s journey, she’ll talk about California, Mexi-Cali, Mexico, and Arizona were all overrun as well. There were pockets of humanity, but the dead were ruling the states and probably the world now. It’s a little sad for the two, but Paul says that they’re alive, so there is hope to live on. Alicia will nod and say that, like Paul said, they have to live on for those who lost their lives. Paul will look at her curiously before both are called over to get into the truck. As they get in, the team of seven (including Madison, Alicia, Paul, and Kwahu) get in the vehicles and they begin to drive off. As they leave Bloomfield we cut to black.

When we return, we see our group reaching the river community and let in. As the vehicles stop, Madison tells everyone to not go too far as June comes by to see her. Alicia will leave the two and go for a walk while the adults sit in the car, out of the sun, and talk about the living situation at the river community. June, like John, explains they’re doing well and the river has been going up some with the weather beginning to cool. Madison will wipe her forehead and say that it still feels like summer, with June nodding along but saying that it’ll soon be fall and by then things will begin to properly cool a bit. Changing subject here, Madison will ask for a more in depth talk on The Family since she hadn’t gotten a full explanation. The nurse will go into Jason Riley, his offering of help if the communities join The Family, and how the man clearly had a motivation to fighting the undead.

Madison will shake her head here, saying that this Family clearly has not had to face the dead they have. They are a part of life now and it would take years upon years to eradicate them. Nodding again, June will agree with Madison, but also say it might be worth having more allies. If these people are legit, they could expand their network to more communities. The Family might have things to offer the Bloomfield safezone that could greatly benefit them. Countering this, Madison will talk about Lomasi and how hostile she and her group were to them. And then there was the CRM before that.

“What we saw down there in the basement… that was not normal. Peter was willing to sacrifice the whole community for that research. How could it be that important to throw all our lives away?”

June will be silent and agree, admitting that she couldn’t figure out what Project Votus was or is. But using the infected as research… maybe they were trying to find a cure. Madison immediately counters by saying there is no way they can cure the undead. A missing arm, a hole in the stomach, a partially sliced neck, there is no cure for that. The CRM were willing to throw away lives for a fantasy. June will then ask if that’s why Madison killed Peter. We have silence from both of them until Madison admits that was it.

“I had to do it… I couldn’t risk losing these people for that.”

Nearby the trucks, we zoom out from the two women to see Paul is eavesdropping on the conversation, though away enough to not be noticed. This information bothers him some with his change of expression, but suddenly Tobias comes walking by and notices Kwahu and Paul, waving and coming over to the former. The two have a fun banter before Tobias turns to Paul and asks how he’s been. Paul will smile and says he’s liking it here with them. It has been so long since he had a place he could call home. When Tobias asks about Martha, his smile lessens some and he says she’s doing fine as well. Kwahu will ask for confirmation that he’s from Georgia and Paul will smile more again and say that yes and that is the second time he’s been asked that. Sensing Tobias or Kwahu will ask, Paul tells them a short version of this trip from there. Once that’s said, Kwahu will ask Paul what kept him going and Paul will say that his first group had a saying:

“Ones lives, we all live.”

He couldn’t just sit down and give up. He needed to live on for them. The smile is gone as memories of his group and Karina go through his mind. Now if you already know who Karina is, we’ll see her again, don’t worry.

We’ll now cut to Alicia who, along with a few other members of the team, is doing stretches to loosen up her body. She’ll take a break after some exercise and pull out her pistol, checking it over some. Checking the magazine and examining it, she’ll feel something brushing her leg and looks down to see Skidmark. Getting on a knee, she pets the cat as it brushes up against her. Not far behind the cat comes Daniel, saying hello to Alicia as the cat returns to him. He’ll inquire about her arm, to which Alicia will say she’s still getting used to it. After petting the cat more, Alicia will inquire about The Family and his thoughts on them. Daniel snorts at this, saying they’re ridiculous and absurd.

“So it’s true? They believe we can wipe out the infected?”

Daniel will nod but say that this is no time to kill the dead. You can’t just run out and kill them, you need a base first and enough weapons and ammo to fight them. Alicia will nod, talking about the hordes they’ve fought before. There were so many infected and almost every fight with a horde has ended in disaster or near disaster. But then she’ll bring up the CRM, how they had weapons and armor capable of fighting off the dead. This time Daniel is a little thoughtful, but only a little as he explains that there are still way more of the dead than the living. Maybe if they have the gear, but they do not have the numbers. And clearly even with CRM backing, Bloomfield barely survived their last horde. Survival is staying where we are and defending what we have.

But Daniel notices that something is off with Alicia and says that there is something on her mind. Alicia nods and talks more quietly with Daniel about her worries about her mother and the takeover of Bloomfield.

“Peter died and we just took over. We don’t have any more resources, but people seem happier… maybe?”

It’s here Daniel recognizes that something is on Alicia’s mind and he asks what it is. At first trying to hide it, Alicia admits that she heard Tobias being beaten Peter’s soldiers for information and to “tie up loose ends” but says that Madison could have gotten Peter to fix things. So much has been lost before and the CRM and Peter seemed like they can maybe live a better life, an actual life. They’ve lost too much.

This is news to Daniel, but he has a quick, gruff response back:

“Alicia… don’t take this wrong, but you, your mother, and Tobias haven’t had to suffer much. You lived all your life in America in a nice home and neighborhood. You never had to fight for your life on a daily basis or kill people who were once close to you or had any major problems with your government. You lived soft, comfortable lives.”

Alicia’s face turns sour, but Daniel continues before she can say anything:

“In El Salvador, my life was mostly violence, men in charge cracking down on the people. Every decade there was a coup or some sort of disaster. There were times of peace, but never for too long. What you’re saying is the start of tyranny. Beating a kid to “tie up loose ends” is not a life you want to live in. I know because I had that life.”

These words of wisdom do get Alicia thinking, but she continues that even though she has seen her mother has changed, she can’t help but worry that she hasn’t really changed. Daniel, noticing Madison calling people back to the vehicles (including a few others like Robert (Tobias’s uncle)), motions her to go over there and advises her to talk to her mom about this directly. Face the problem directly. Alicia feels a little nervous, but nods and walks over to her mom, who is getting into the driver’s seat. Alicia hops into the passenger side, looking at her mom as the vehicle roars into life. As the group (along with a couple people from the river community) head out the southeast gates, there’s silence between the two Clarks. Madison notices this and asks what’s the matter, but Alicia is still trying to figure out how to ask her mom the question, so she asks if June told her anything about the Family.

Madison will recap what June told her and once Madison is done Alicia will talk about Daniel’s opinion. When Madison asks how Alicia herself feels, the young Clark talks about being cautious about this new group, but also feeling they need allies in this time. Nodding, our leader will say to her daughter she wants that too. We get more silence until Alicia asks the same question that Strand asked her about the CRM and Captain Peter. Madison remains silent, but it’s clear to the young adult that her mother is conflicted. Alicia will ask for confirmation and Madison will respond that it was better that they cut ties with them. This blunt response slightly startles Alicia, who begins to ask why she thinks that, but before she can get the question fully out they reach their destination, a small town of only a few buildings out in the hills. Kind of like Beclabito from episode three of this season.

Here Madison stops and gets out of the car, we the audience seeing she’s uncomfortable with telling Alicia what happened. Organizing the group, Madison leads some of the team into the gardening store from where they parked. Inside, they begin to grab fertilizer and other usual gardening tools. All the plants have withered away long ago, so those are ignored by the scavenging team. Paul hefts one of the bags with a partner and walks it outside with Madison hauling another by their side. As they set the heavy bags in the vehicle, Paul tells Madison he heard what she said to June. Irritated, Madison will scowl and tell Paul it’s none of his business. Paul admits it isn’t and he’s not going to tell anybody, but tells Madison that life is precious and even though he didn’t hear everything, her tone said to him that this choice she made was hard.

Madison, still angry, though trying to be reasonable, explains simply that you can’t throw away lives because a single person says they have a cure. Paul will be silent, picking up another bag and walking it back with Madison. He’ll then talk about how he was in a hospital early in the outbreak. Only one doctor was left. Every other person was dead, either by the undead or the military. The doctor saved him, but not before taking his friend’s life when she thought he was dead.

“I don’t know who this Peter is, or what his motivations were. There is a cure to whatever this thing is… but it’s not the kind that people want.”

Huffing, Madison sets the fertilizer in the truck and asks Paul why he keeps going on. He’ll reply that he can’t give up because if he does, those that helped him live will be lost. He has to protect their memories and protect those around him. Madison stares at Paul, then sighs and picks up another bag.

Outside the building Alicia, with her prosthetic, isn’t as suitable for carrying the fertilizer and supplies, so she stays in the open near the vehicles, watching out for infected. Most of the group have not been to this deserted town before, so everyone is quiet and vigilant of the surroundings. A few infected wander the streets, but they are dealt with by Alicia, Kwahu with his bow and arrow, and a few of the others. As Madison walks out she’ll tell everyone that they’re close to wrapping up. Not long after she says this though Kwahu hears something and tells everyone to listen. Everyone else begins to listen and soon they all hear it: Moaning. Madison will urge everyone to hurry up and to get into the vehicles, causing everyone to begin hurrying up. But before they can get far though the undead begin to arrive through the way they came in. Paul is the first to notice them and he cries out a warning before we cut to black.

When we return the group has their guns out and ready to fire, Kwahu making the first kill with his bow. Soon others join in the killing with their guns, taking on the first wave of undead. But that small first attack is the start as the rest of the swarm starts coming in. Madison orders everyone to get inside the buildings and block entrances. The group begins to scatter here, many going back into the store they were raiding while the others split for another building, this one a regular house. Alicia and Paul are among this second group as they break into a house. Both will hold the door and rush everyone else inside before following after them. Quickly two of the others force a TV stand against the door as the pounding begins.

With the entrance blocked, everyone goes for the windows, closing them as fast as possible before the dead can reach in. Alicia goes to the back door and, with another person, pushes a couch up to block it. But as soon as that’s done the front door begins to creak from the amount of punishment it’s taking from the undead. The windows near that door begin to crack and quickly break as the dead reach inside for the living. The survivors begin stabbing those sticking their arms into the house and Paul pushes another object to block the front door. He’ll then pull out a machete and chop off the arm of an infected that has grabbed one of the survivors. Alicia will join Paul, stabbing an infected trying to get in through the face with a punch of her prosthetic. We’ll watch both of them keep fighting, but the shot of both of them attacking the dead also has a shot of the basement door. Over the noise of the dead outside, nobody is noticing that it’s shaking some.

Meanwhile, Madison, Kwahu, Robert, and the rest that came with their leader are having a hard time blocking the main entrance with its glass front. Pushing displays against the front, everyone has their weapons drawn as cracks begin to form. We’ll draw out the scene as the cracks grow and we watch the survivors prepare for a fight. Soon enough, the glass breaks and the undead begin to march into the shop, right into the weapons of the living. We’ll get a good fight sequence with the undead and all our members as they’re all pushed into another room of the store. There will be a couple casualties of the fight as the dead swarm in. We’ll get some more fights out of this, including moments such as: Kwahu smashing a pot against an infected before using the broken edge to stab it in the eye; Robert kicking an infected into some others, then using the delay to shoot them with his pistol; and Madison killing an infected one after the other with her Warhammer in swift attacks.

Back at the house, we watch these people fighting until the back door breaks. The couch is moved by the invading undead and a majority of the group goes to stop the tide. But as they do that we linger on the door to the basement as it begins to shudder more. Alicia notices and starts to call out, but as she does the lock breaks and several undead fall into the hallway, one of them grabbing a woman’s leg and biting her ankle. The cry causes some members to go back and deal with the undead, but just as those that came up from the basement are finished the front door loses its fight and breaks open. Another person is pinned by the undead and brutally ripped apart as Alicia calls for everyone to get together. Everyone still alive moves into the living room, grabbing chairs and the couch from the back door and using them as small barriers to block the infected coming at them. Alicia, giving the group time to set up, starts killing the dead coming at here in a sequence that I want have show that she’s become an excellent melee fighter, using her butterfly knife and prosthetic in great synchrony. She’ll deal with around six infected before jumping behind the barrier. We’ll keep the fighting going with the remainder holding off the dead.

Switching back to the store, Madison strikes another infected in the head with her hammer, but it gets stuck and, seeing another infected lunging at her, she pulls out her shotgun and blasts it in the chest. While not killing it, the undead does fly back some and into another infected. With enough time now, Madison rips out her hammer and swings it at another infected. Even with the killings, the ghouls still outnumber the living. Just like Alicia’s party, Madison and her group are backed into a corner and hope is starting to dim. As Madison raises her hammer, ready to strike however, she hears a different noise outside: Vehicles. Then not long after the sound of gunfire is heard as well. The undead about to attack them are distracted and Madison, seeing her chance, starts to kill them, along with the rest of her team.

We’ll cut back here to Alicia, who’s barely holding off the dead as they push against the chairs and couch. All of them are doing their best in holding off the dead, but the exhaustion is starting to wear them out. One of their numbers gets deeply cut on his arm by an infected’s rotted fingers reaching through the gap and they fall down, the dead swarming over them. The hole opens, all of them are fighting hard to stay alive. But as the undead move closer, one of the attacks is shot through the head and we see people coming in and taking down the undead with guns and knives. Very quickly all the infected are slain and Alicia stares in shock at the newcomers. One of these new people, a man just taller than her and in kevlar, ushers her outside and reassures her its fine. As she, Paul, and the others walk out they notice the rest of her group are (mostly) safe. Madison rushes over to hug her daughter and they embrace.

As they’re hugging, the man that helped Alicia, along with his group of several dozen, watch over scene in silence. Once the Clarks break from the embrace, Madison will thank the group for their help. Their leader steps forward and says it’s no problem, The Family are there to help. Suddenly on her guard, Madison asks what they were doing here and the leader says they were hoping to scavenge the town for supplies.

“But it seems you already got to it,” continues the man.

Madison will look at their saviors and back at the supplies. They need those supplies… but these people helped them out. Unwillingly, but putting on a grateful air, Madison offers up some of what they have to scraped up and says they can stay and help them out with looking for anything else. A small smile appears on the man’s face and he thanks her, offering his hand and introducing himself as Vince. Madison introduces herself in return and shakes the hand back.

Here we cut to black and when we come back we see Madison’s group and the Family looking around town for other noteworthy items. Alicia and Paul help one of The Family carry some discarded clothes to a container and throw him in. As the woman thanks them and heads off, Alicia notices Paul watches them leave and then turns to look at Madison helping some others. A small smile slips onto his face as he looks about, seeing a member of their group and The Family kill an infected together that was walking out of another building. He’ll remark that this is the kind of world they need, with everyone working together. Done with lifting things, Alicia says it’s not easy, but possible. They need to see The Family’s home if they’re going to work together, need to know what they’re really like. As Alicia says this, she’ll notice her mother helping some of The Family out with their own scavenged materials. Paul will notice and tell Alicia that her mom is a good person and that he’s really happy she took him and Martha in. It get Alicia thinking as she continues to watch her mom.

Soon after that, Vince announces they need to head back. As The Family get into their vehicles, Vince will thank Madison and tell her that he hopes they can work together more soon. The engines roar to life and The Family departs, heading back where they came from. Madison, Alicia, Paul, Kwahu, Robert, and the rest watch the retreating vehicles until they’re dust clouds block sight of them. Here Madison announces to everyone they need to head back. As everyone goes to their own vehicles, Alicia asks her mom to stay for a second. Madison turns and both stare at each other as Alicia asks what happened to Peter. Madison presses her lips close, not want to tell Alicia what she’s gone. Alicia will press her mother though and tell her that she needs to know if Madison killed him. Not wanting to lie to her daughter, Madison sighs…

“I’m sorry Alicia. I’ve been trying to be better for you, for everyone… I had to do it. He was going to let you, me, everyone die! He said that the Civic Republic were going to kill us all if anything went wrong, but… I couldn’t let them hurt you! I’m sorry, sweetie… I just wanted to protect you.”

Shame drips from Madison’s words as she looks down at the ground. Alicia, seeing her mother’s reaction, just stares at her in silence. We’ll draw this out for a bit until the younger Clark hugs her mom close. Madison hugs back and repeats that she just wanted to protect her daughter. Alicia will say it’s alright and that she forgives her mom because she didn’t act out of selfishness, but for others. This’ll be a very heartfelt moment for both to get their feelings out. But soon a honk is heard, and Robert tells them they need to hurry both. Both Clarks break the hug and hurry back to their vehicle, starting it up a leading the small caravan back to the communities. We’ll cut to them entering the San Juan River Community and dropping off some supplies, focusing on both Clarks feeling more comfortable with each other.

Then we cut to them reaching Bloomfield as the sun begins to dip. Here the rest of the supplies are moved into storage as Strand greets them. He’ll ask about supplies and Madison will tell them they had to split it with The Family since they rescued them from a swarm and Strand will be slightly disappointed, pointing out that some of the community will not be happy that they don’t have the supplies they need. Madison will say that might be true, but they might also have new allies with The Family. Strand will then notice Alicia and ask how she’s doing and she’ll say that she feels finally comfortable with her prosthetic, twisting her arm to fully view it. Nodding, Strand will walk over to storage and view the supplies. As he does, Alicia will start to head over to dinner, but notices her mom heading towards the school. Calling out to her, Alicia asks where her mom is going and Madison will reply that she needs to do something real quick and she’ll be joining her daughter soon.

We’ll stick on Madison here as she enters the school and walks to the door to the lab basement. There is some nervousness about her as she looks at the entrance, but she takes a deep breath and opens the door. After reaching the bottom of the stairs into the empty and infected-free room, Madison starts to scour the room for something. She finally finds what she’s looking for: Documents on Project Votus. She opens up the folder and start to peruse, mumbling to herself:

“Okay… let’s find out what you’ve been doing.”

At this, we’ll cut to black and the end of the episode.
